Carbon filters typically need replacement every 6 to 12 months, depending on your water usage and what’s in your water. If you’re filtering city water with high chlorine, the carbon gets saturated faster. Well water with sediment or iron will clog filters more quickly.
Reverse osmosis systems have multiple stages. The pre-filters and post-filters need replacement every 6 to 12 months. The RO membrane itself lasts 2 to 3 years if the pre-filters are changed on schedule. If you skip pre-filter changes, the membrane clogs and stops working.
Water softeners regenerate automatically, usually every few days. You’ll need to add salt to the brine tank every month or two. Other than that, they’re low maintenance. The resin bed inside the softener can last 10 to 15 years if the system is maintained properly.

Will a water filtration system lower my water pressure?
