What causes the rotten egg smell in my Windermere well water?
That smell is hydrogen sulfide gas, and it shows up in well water for two main reasons. Either it’s naturally occurring in the ground where your well draws from, or bacteria in your water system or well are producing it as a byproduct.
The difference matters because it changes how we treat it. If it’s naturally occurring hydrogen sulfide, we typically use air injection oxidation or hydrogen peroxide injection to remove it before it reaches your taps. If bacteria are causing it, we need to disinfect the system first and then set up filtration that prevents regrowth.

Central Florida well water often has high iron content, sometimes combined with sulfur. If both are present, the system needs to handle both, which is why custom engineering matters. A system designed for low-iron water in another state won’t keep up with what’s coming out of Windermere wells.
Will a water softener remove the sulfur smell from my well water?
No. A water softener removes hardness—calcium and magnesium—but it doesn’t remove hydrogen sulfide gas, which is what causes the sulfur or rotten egg smell.
Some people think softening will fix everything, but softeners and filtration systems do different jobs. If you have both hard water and a sulfur smell, you need both a softener and a hydrogen sulfide treatment system. Do saltless water softeners work well in Central Florida?
Not really. Saltless systems are actually descalers, not softeners—they don’t remove hardness from your water. They alter the structure of minerals so they’re less likely to stick to pipes and appliances, but the minerals are still there.
Central Florida has some of the hardest water in the country. Windermere well water often tests high for hardness, and descalers don’t perform well in those conditions. You’ll still see spotting, your soap won’t lather properly, and your skin and hair won’t feel as soft as they would with actual soft water.
If you want to remove hardness, you need a traditional salt-based water softener. It’s the only technology that actually pulls calcium and magnesium out of the water. Descalers have their place in areas with low to moderate hardness, but Florida isn’t one of them.
